This is a steampunk helmet digital painting done in Gimp. It is the Standard Issue Suborean Guard Combat Helmet as worn by Sylen Benevolen and Atonis Trogade from my digital comic project.
I experimented again with a different art process which I will try to describe below.
- Sketched out some rough ideas:
Steampunk Helmet Idea Sketches - In Blender I modelled a quick 3D mesh of my idea, making sure that when I rendered it I activated the Wireframe Modifier as this would help me with perspective work later on:
Steampunk Helmet 3D Model - I imported a render of the 3D model from Blender into Gimp and started working in 2D. I used Gimp’s Paths tool to construct various selection areas so that I could start blocking in colours:
Using The Paths Tool - Once I’d constructed my selection areas, I used Gimp’s Bucket Fill tool:
Bucket Fill Blocking In Colours 2 - I used more selection paths to do the shading:
Shading With Selections - I then imported the Suborean Emblem and used the Perspective Tool to orientate it on the side of the helmet:
Emblem Perspective Tool - More shading and adding reflections on the lenses:
Shading and Reflections - Finally and added some scuffs and scratches:
